Description
Tamsulosin + Solifenacin
Description
Tamsulosin + Solifenacin is a combination medication that includes two different active ingredients. Tamsulosin is an alpha-blocker, while Solifenacin is an anticholinergic (or antimuscarinic) agent. The product is a modified-release tablet designed to provide both a quick-acting and a prolonged effect.
Indication
This combination is primarily indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) in men. These symptoms are often associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate. It is used in men who have not responded adequately to monotherapy (treatment with a single drug). The symptoms treated include both “voiding symptoms” (difficulty starting urination, weak stream, incomplete emptying) and “storage symptoms” (urinary urgency, increased frequency of urination).
Mechanism of Action
The combination works by targeting two different mechanisms to relieve LUTS associated with BPH:
- Tamsulosin: Tamsulosin is a selective alpha-1A and alpha-1D adrenoceptor antagonist. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck. By blocking these receptors, it reduces the obstruction of the urethra caused by the enlarged prostate, which improves urine flow and alleviates voiding symptoms.
- Solifenacin: Solifenacin is a competitive and selective antagonist of muscarinic receptors, with a high affinity for M3 receptors in the bladder. It works by blocking the action of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that causes bladder muscle contractions. By inhibiting these involuntary contractions of the detrusor muscle, solifenacin increases the bladder’s capacity and reduces the symptoms of urgency and frequency.
