Description
Linagliptin + Empagliflozin
Description
This product is a combination medication containing two active ingredients: linagliptin and empagliflozin. It is used to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Indication
Linagliptin + Empagliflozin is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is often prescribed when a single medication isn’t enough to manage blood sugar levels.
Mechanism of Action
The combination works through two distinct, yet complementary, mechanisms:
- Linagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. It works by preventing the breakdown of certain gut hormones called incretins, such as GLP-1 and GIP. These hormones are released after eating and stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin and decrease the amount of glucose produced by the liver. By preserving these hormones, linagliptin helps to lower blood sugar levels, especially after meals.
- Empagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It works by blocking the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys. This protein is responsible for reabsorbing glucose from the urine back into the bloodstream. By blocking this protein, empagliflozin causes the kidneys to excrete more glucose in the urine, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.
