Description

Gestodine + Ethinylestradol is a combination oral contraceptive, often referred to as a “birth control pill.” It is a synthetic hormonal medication that contains two main components: Gestodine, which is a third-generation synthetic progestin, and Ethinylestradol, a synthetic estrogen. This combination is designed to mimic the natural hormones of a woman’s body to prevent pregnancy.

Indication

The primary indication for Gestodine + Ethinylestradol is the prevention of pregnancy. It is a highly effective form of birth control when used correctly and consistently.

Mechanism of Action

The contraceptive effect of Gestodine + Ethinylestradol is based on three primary mechanisms:

  1. Suppression of Ovulation: The estrogen and progestin in the tablet work synergistically to inhibit the release of gonadotropins (FSH and LH) from the pituitary gland. This suppression prevents the maturation of follicles and the subsequent surge of luteinizing hormone (LH), which is necessary for ovulation to occur. Without ovulation, there is no egg to be fertilized.

  2. Alteration of Cervical Mucus: The Gestodine component causes the cervical mucus to become thicker and less permeable. This change creates a physical barrier that makes it difficult for sperm to travel through the cervix and reach the egg.
  3. Changes to the Endometrial Lining: The hormones also cause changes to the endometrium (the lining of the uterus). They make the lining thinner and less receptive to implantation. If a fertilized egg were to somehow reach the uterus, the altered endometrial environment would be less likely to support its development.
