Description
Estradiol + Dydrogesterone
Description
Estradiol + Dydrogesterone is a combination medication that contains two female hormones: estradiol (an estrogen) and dydrogesterone (a progestogen). It is a form of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) designed to alleviate symptoms associated with menopause.
Indication
This combination drug is primarily indicated for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to treat:
- Symptoms of estrogen deficiency: Hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and other menopausal symptoms.
- Prevention of osteoporosis: It can be used to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis in women at high risk of fractures who are intolerant to other osteoporosis medications.
Mechanism of Action
- Estradiol: This is an estrogen that replaces the declining levels of natural estrogen in the body during and after menopause. It acts on estrogen receptors in various tissues, including the brain, blood vessels, and bone, to alleviate menopausal symptoms and prevent bone loss.
- Dydrogesterone: This is a progestogen that is included to protect the uterine lining (endometrium) from the proliferative effects of the estradiol. When estrogen is administered alone in women with an intact uterus, it can cause the endometrial lining to thicken, increasing the risk of endometrial cancer. Dydrogesterone counteracts this effect, causing the endometrium to shed, which significantly reduces the risk.
