Description
Ertugliflozin and Metformin Hydrochloride
Description: Ertugliflozin and Metformin Hydrochloride is a combination medicine that contains two different types of anti-diabetic drugs. It is used as part of a treatment plan with diet and exercise to help improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Indication: This medication is indicated for adults with type 2 diabetes who are not adequately controlled on metformin alone, or who are already taking both ertugliflozin and metformin as separate tablets.
Mechanism of Action: The drug works through the complementary actions of its two components:
- Ertugliflozin: This is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It works by blocking the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys, which is responsible for reabsorbing most of the glucose from the blood back into the body. By inhibiting this protein, ertugliflozin causes the kidneys to excrete more glucose in the urine, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.
- Metformin: This is a biguanide-class drug. It works by decreasing the amount of glucose produced by the liver, reducing the absorption of glucose from the stomach, and helping the body use insulin more effectively.
