Description
Deferasirox
Description Deferasirox is an oral iron chelating agent. It is a medication used to treat chronic iron overload, which can occur from frequent blood transfusions (e.g., in patients with thalassemia or other chronic anemias) or other conditions that cause excess iron to accumulate in the body.
Indication The primary indications for Deferasirox include:
- Treatment of chronic iron overload in patients with transfusional hemosiderosis (iron buildup due to repeated blood transfusions).
- Treatment of chronic iron overload in non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia syndromes.
- Treatment of chronic iron overload in patients with beta-thalassemia major who are at least 2 years of age.
Mechanism of Action Deferasirox works by chelating iron. Chelation is a process where a drug binds to a substance (in this case, iron) to form a complex. This complex is then excreted from the body, primarily through the feces. Deferasirox has a high affinity for iron (Fe3+), and by binding to it, the drug helps to remove the excess iron from the body’s tissues and organs, preventing iron-related organ damage.
