Description
Cinacalcet
Description: Cinacalcet is a medication in a class of drugs called calcimimetics. It is an oral drug that is used to manage disorders related to the parathyroid glands.
Indication: Cinacalcet is indicated for the treatment of:
- Secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis.
- Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels in the blood) in patients with parathyroid carcinoma.
- Severe hypercalcemia in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism who are unable to undergo surgery.
Mechanism of Action: Cinacalcet works by increasing the sensitivity of the calcium-sensing receptors on the parathyroid glands to extracellular calcium. By mimicking the effects of calcium on these receptors, it suppresses the release of parathyroid hormone (PTH). The reduction in PTH levels leads to a decrease in serum calcium and phosphorus levels.
