Candesartan + Hydrochlorothiazide

Description: This is a combination medication that contains two active ingredients: candesartan and hydrochlorothiazide. Candesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), and hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic. The combination is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) when treatment with a single drug is not effective.

Indication: It is indicated for the treatment of essential hypertension.

Mechanism of Action:

  • Candesartan: It works by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptors found in many tissues, such as vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland. Angiotensin II is a powerful vasoconstrictor, so by blocking its effects, candesartan causes blood vessels to relax and widen, lowering blood pressure.
  • Hydrochlorothiazide: It acts on the kidneys to increase the excretion of sodium and water, which reduces the total blood volume. This decrease in blood volume also contributes to a reduction in blood pressure. The combination of these two mechanisms provides a more potent blood pressure-lowering effect than either drug alone.
