Description
Mirabegron
Description: Mirabegron is a prescription medication used to treat overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms. It comes in an extended-release tablet or oral suspension form.
Indication: Mirabegron is indicated for the treatment of:
- Overactive bladder (OAB) with symptoms of urge urinary incontinence, urgency, and urinary frequency. It can be used as a monotherapy or in combination with other medications like solifenacin.
- Neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO), a bladder dysfunction caused by neurological impairment, in pediatric patients aged 3 years and older.
Mechanism of Action: Mirabegron is a selective beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist. It works by activating the beta-3 adrenergic receptors in the bladder. This activation causes the detrusor smooth muscle, which surrounds the bladder, to relax during the storage phase of the urinary fill-void cycle. By relaxing this muscle, the bladder’s capacity to store urine increases, which in turn reduces the symptoms of urgency, frequency, and incontinence.
