Description
Sevelamer carbonate
Description: Sevelamer carbonate is a polymer drug that is not absorbed by the body. It is a non-calcium, metal-free phosphate-binding agent.
Indication: It is used to control high blood levels of phosphorus (hyperphosphatemia) in adult patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly those who are on dialysis. It can also be used in patients with CKD who are not on dialysis but have high serum phosphorus levels.
Mechanism of Action: When taken with meals, Sevelamer carbonate works in the gastrointestinal tract. Its positively charged amine groups bind to the negatively charged phosphate ions from food. This binding prevents the phosphate from being absorbed into the bloodstream. The sevelamer-phosphate complex is then eliminated from the body through the feces. By preventing phosphorus absorption, it helps lower and control serum phosphate levels in the blood.
