Description
Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe
Description
Rosuvastatin + Ezetimibe is a combination medication that contains two active ingredients: rosuvastatin, a statin, and ezetimibe, a cholesterol absorption inhibitor. This combination is designed to provide a more comprehensive approach to lowering cholesterol than either drug alone.
Indication
This medication is indicated for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia, a condition characterized by high levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. It’s used in patients who have not achieved their target cholesterol levels with a statin alone, and for those who require a more significant reduction in cholesterol.
Mechanism of Action
- Rosuvastatin works by inhibiting an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase, which is a key enzyme in the liver responsible for producing cholesterol. By blocking this enzyme, rosuvastatin reduces the amount of cholesterol the liver makes, which in turn leads to a decrease in LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream.
- Ezetimibe works differently. It acts on the brush border of the small intestine to inhibit the absorption of cholesterol from the food you eat. By preventing cholesterol from entering the body, ezetimibe further helps to lower cholesterol levels.
The combination of these two drugs provides a dual mechanism of action—one that reduces the body’s production of cholesterol and another that reduces its absorption, leading to a more potent cholesterol-lowering effect.
