Linaglitpin + Metformin

Description: Linagliptin + Metformin is a combination prescription medicine that contains two different medications to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise.

Indication: It is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve glycemic control. It is not for the treatment of type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

Mechanism of Action: This product works through the complementary actions of its two components:

  • Linagliptin: This is a DPP-4 inhibitor. It works by blocking the enzyme DPP-4, which normally breaks down “incretin” hormones like GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). By inhibiting this enzyme, Linagliptin increases the levels of these hormones, which in turn stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin and decreases the production of glucagon. This effect is glucose-dependent, meaning it primarily works when blood sugar levels are high.
  • Metformin: This is a biguanide. Its primary mechanism is to decrease the production of glucose in the liver (hepatic gluconeogenesis). It also helps the body use insulin more effectively and reduces the absorption of glucose from the intestines.
