Description
Oseltamivir
Description: Oseltamivir is an antiviral medication that belongs to a class of drugs called neuraminidase inhibitors. It is used to treat and prevent infections caused by the influenza virus (influenza A and influenza B), commonly known as the flu. It is available in capsule and oral suspension forms.
Indication: Oseltamivir is indicated for the treatment of acute, uncomplicated influenza in patients who have been symptomatic for no more than two days. It is also used for the prophylaxis (prevention) of influenza in certain populations, such as those who have been in close contact with an infected individual or during a community outbreak.
Mechanism of Action: Oseltamivir is an inactive prodrug that is converted in the body to its active form, oseltamivir carboxylate. This active metabolite works by selectively inhibiting the neuraminidase enzyme, which is found on the surface of influenza viruses. This enzyme is essential for the virus to release new viral particles from infected host cells and to spread the infection throughout the body. By inhibiting this enzyme, oseltamivir prevents the virus from multiplying and spreading, allowing the body’s immune system to fight off the infection.
