Description
Fosinopril
Description: Fosinopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It is a prodrug, meaning it is an inactive compound that is converted into its active form, fosinoprilat, in the body after it is administered.
Indication: Fosinopril is primarily used for the treatment of:
- High blood pressure (hypertension).
- Heart failure, often in combination with other medications.
- It may also be used off-label to slow the progression of kidney disease in people with diabetes.
Mechanism of Action: Fosinoprilat, the active metabolite, works by competitively inhibiting ACE. This enzyme is responsible for converting angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a powerful vasoconstrictor. By inhibiting this conversion, Fosinopril causes blood vessels to relax and widen, which lowers blood pressure and makes it easier for the heart to pump blood. This action also reduces the secretion of aldosterone, which helps the body excrete excess sodium and water.
