Description
Alfuzosin
Description: Alfuzosin is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as alpha-blockers. It is available as an extended-release tablet for oral use.
Indication: Alfuzosin is indicated for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate, in men. Symptoms of BPH can include:
- Difficulty urinating (hesitancy, weak stream, or dribbling)
- Incomplete bladder emptying
- Painful urination
- Urinary frequency and urgency
Mechanism of Action: Alfuzosin works as a selective alpha-1 adrenergic antagonist. It functions by selectively blocking alpha-1 receptors, which are found in the smooth muscles of the prostate, bladder base, bladder neck, and prostatic urethra. By blocking these receptors, Alfuzosin causes the smooth muscles in these areas to relax. This relaxation reduces the resistance to urine flow, which in turn helps to improve urinary flow and relieve the symptoms of BPH.
