Risedronate Sodium
Description: Risedronate Sodium is a bisphosphonate, a class of non-hormonal drugs that inhibit bone breakdown. It is a crystalline powder that is soluble in water. It is available in various tablet strengths for oral administration.
Indication: Risedronate Sodium is primarily used for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become thin, weak, and susceptible to fractures. It is also used to treat Paget’s disease of bone, a condition where the body’s bone-building process is disrupted. The drug is prescribed for postmenopausal women and men with osteoporosis, as well as for men and women who are taking glucocorticoid medications that can lead to bone loss.
Mechanism of Action: Risedronate Sodium works by binding to hydroxyapatite crystals in the bone, where it acts as an antiresorptive agent. At a cellular level, it inhibits the activity of osteoclasts, which are the cells responsible for breaking down bone tissue. By reducing bone resorption, it slows down the rate of bone turnover and helps to increase bone density, ultimately decreasing the risk of fractures.
