Description: Deferasirox is an iron chelating agent, which is a medication used to remove excess iron from the body. It is administered orally and is available in tablet form.
Indication: It is primarily indicated for the treatment of chronic iron overload in patients who are receiving long-term blood transfusions for conditions such as:
- Beta-thalassemia
- Sickle cell disease
- Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS)
It is also used for the treatment of chronic iron overload in patients with non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia syndromes.
Mechanism of Action: Deferasirox works by binding to iron in the blood and forming a stable complex. This complex is then eliminated from the body, primarily through the feces. It has a high selectivity for iron, and a 2:1 ratio of deferasirox to iron is required to effectively bind and excrete the iron. By removing the excess iron, it helps to prevent or reverse the organ damage that can be caused by iron overload, particularly to the liver and heart.
