Description
Telmirox–A
Description
Amlodipine Besylate Eq to Amlodipine + Telmisartan is a combination medication containing two active ingredients:
- Amlodipine: A long-acting dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker (CCB).
- Telmisartan: An angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB).
This medication is formulated to combine the antihypertensive effects of both drugs into a single tablet, providing a dual mechanism for blood pressure control.
Indications
This combination drug is primarily indicated for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). It is typically prescribed for adult patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled with either amlodipine or telmisartan monotherapy. By using a single tablet, it simplifies the treatment regimen and may improve patient adherence.
Mechanism of Action
The medication works through two distinct, yet complementary, mechanisms to lower blood pressure:
- Amlodipine: As a calcium channel blocker, amlodipine inhibits the influx of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle. This causes the peripheral arteries to relax and widen, a process known as vasodilation. The resulting reduction in peripheral resistance makes it easier for the heart to pump blood, thereby lowering overall blood pressure.
- Telmisartan: As an angiotensin II receptor blocker, telmisartan selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to its receptors in various tissues, including vascular smooth muscle. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor (a substance that narrows blood vessels). By blocking its action, telmisartan prevents blood vessel constriction, leading to vasodilation and a decrease in blood pressure. It also reduces the secretion of aldosterone, which helps decrease salt and water retention.
