Lortadine
Description
Loratadine + Pseudoephedrine Sulfate is a combination medication that includes an antihistamine and a decongestant.
Indications
This combination drug is specifically indicated for the temporary relief of nasal and non-nasal symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis.
- Nasal congestion
- Sneezing 🤧
- Runny nose
- Itchy or watery eyes
- Itchy nose or throat
It’s intended for adults and children over a certain age (typically 12 years and older) and is not meant for long-term use.
Mechanism of Action
The combination drug works through two different mechanisms:
- Loratadine’s Mechanism: As a non-sedating antihistamine, loratadine works by selectively blocking the peripheral H1-histamine receptors . When an allergen enters the body, it triggers the release of histamine, a chemical that causes allergic symptoms.
By blocking these receptors, loratadine prevents histamine from binding and causing symptoms like sneezing, itching, and a runny nose.
- Pseudoephedrine’s Mechanism: Pseudoephedrine acts as a vasoconstrictor.
It works by stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors in the lining of blood vessels within the nasal passages. This stimulation causes the blood vessels to constrict, which reduces blood flow to the area. The reduced blood flow helps to decrease swelling of the nasal mucosa, thereby alleviating nasal congestion and making it easier to breathe.
