Description
Fusia
Description Fusia is a brand name for a topical antibiotic containing the active ingredient fusidic acid. It is typically available as a cream, ointment, or gel for external use. Fusidic acid is a bacteriostatic antibiotic, which means it prevents bacteria from growing rather than killing them outright, allowing the body’s immune system to clear the infection.
Indication Fusia (fusidic acid) is used to treat a variety of bacterial skin infections, including:
- Impetigo
- Folliculitis
- Boils
- Infected dermatitis (such as eczema)
- Infected cuts, scrapes, and grazes
It is effective against a range of susceptible bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus, which is a common cause of skin infections.
Mechanism of Action Fusidic acid works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Specifically, it binds to and prevents the translocation of elongation factor G (EF-G) from the ribosome. EF-G is a crucial protein that facilitates the movement of the ribosome along the messenger RNA (mRNA) strand, which is a necessary step for building new proteins. By blocking this process, fusidic acid stops the bacteria from producing the proteins they need to grow and multiply. This action effectively halts the infection’s spread and allows the host’s immune system to clear the remaining bacteria.
