Description: Paclitaxel is a chemotherapy medication used to treat various types of cancer. It is derived from a compound initially found in the Pacific yew tree and is administered intravenously. It is available in different formulations, including an albumin-bound version.
Indication: It is used to treat a range of cancers, including:

- Non-small cell lung cancer
- Kaposi’s sarcoma (a cancer commonly found in patients with AIDS)

Mechanism of Action: Paclitaxel is a mitotic inhibitor that works by interfering with the normal function of microtubules, which are essential structures for cell division. Specifically, it binds to the beta-tubulin subunits of microtubules and stabilizes them, preventing them from disassembling. This “freezes” the microtubules in place, disrupting the formation of the mitotic spindle, which is required to separate chromosomes during cell division (mitosis). As a result, the cancer cells cannot divide and replicate, leading to their death. This mechanism makes it a powerful anticancer agent.
