Description
Etoricoxib
Description: Etoricoxib is a synthetic, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is a selective inhibitor of the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). It has analgesic (pain-relieving), anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties.
Indication: Etoricoxib is used for the symptomatic relief of various painful and inflammatory conditions. This includes:
- Osteoarthritis (OA)
- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Pain and signs of inflammation associated with acute gouty arthritis
- Short-term treatment of moderate pain after dental surgery
- Chronic low back pain
Mechanism of Action: Etoricoxib works by selectively inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). The COX-2 enzyme is primarily responsible for producing prostaglandins at sites of inflammation. By blocking COX-2, Etoricoxib prevents the synthesis of these prostaglandins, which are chemical messengers that cause pain, swelling, and inflammation. This selective action is intended to provide the pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory benefits of NSAIDs while reducing the risk of gastrointestinal side effects associated with non-selective NSAIDs that also inhibit the COX-1 enzyme (which is important for protecting the stomach lining).
