Description
Gestodine
Description
This is a combined hormonal contraceptive, commonly known as “the pill.” The gestodene component is a third-generation progestogen, while ethinylestradiol is a potent synthetic estrogen. These two hormones work together to prevent pregnancy. Different brands may have varying dosages and regimens (monophasic or triphasic) of these two hormones.
Indications
The primary indication for gestodene and ethinylestradiol is:
- Contraception: To prevent unwanted pregnancy.
It is also sometimes prescribed for non-contraceptive benefits, such as:
- Regulating Menstrual Cycles: It can help with irregular periods and reduce the intensity and duration of menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia).
- Managing Symptoms of Hormonal Imbalance: This can include treating acne vulgaris and managing some symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Mechanism of Action
The combination of gestodene and ethinylestradiol works through several key mechanisms to prevent conception:
- Ovulation Inhibition: The hormones suppress the release of gonadotropins (FSH and LH) from the pituitary gland. This prevents the normal hormonal surge that triggers the release of an egg from the ovary, thus inhibiting ovulation. The gestodene is a highly potent progestogen and is very effective at this action.
- Cervical Mucus Thickening: Gestodene makes the cervical mucus thicker and more viscous. This creates a physical barrier that is difficult for sperm to penetrate, preventing them from reaching the egg.
- Endometrial Changes: The hormones cause changes to the lining of the uterus (endometrium). This makes the uterine lining less receptive to a fertilized egg, reducing the likelihood of successful implantation.
