Mechanism of Action: Apixaban is a direct factor Xa inhibitor. It works by blocking Factor Xa, a key clotting protein in the blood coagulation cascade. By inhibiting this factor, it prevents the formation of thrombin, which is essential for clot formation.

Indications: It is primarily used to prevent blood clots that can lead to stroke in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat). It is also used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients who have had knee or hip replacement surgery.
